Fostering team spirit in a remote world

Blog

At Qoolize, we believe remote teams thrive on connection. From Slack clubs to virtual celebrations, here’s how we keep our team engaged and inspired.

Remote work may have gifted us with zero commute time and allows us to work in our sweatpants, but it also comes with its challenges – like making sure your team still feels like a team. Keeping that sense of connection requires a little creativity and effort when your coworkers are no longer a desk away. There are many fun yet effective ways to keep the remote team spirit thriving while still getting things done, and these are some of my favorites:

Transform communication into connection

Sure, Slack is great for project updates and “Can you check this?” messages, but it can also be a hub for building connections. By creating interest-based channels or clubs, you can turn it into the digital equivalent of a cozy coffee break. For example:

  • Coffee connoisseurs club: Share latte art, debate the best brewing methods, or just post a picture of your trusty mug.
  • Pet parade: Everyone loves a good puppy picture or a mischievous cat story – why not make it a daily dose of joy?
  • Book & movie buffs: Choose a book or a movie, then meet virtually to chat about it. It’s like a mini book club, minus the awkward silences.

Other examples of interest-based channels we’ve recently introduced at Qoolize include a language and culture channel, a travel and adventure club, and an online games channel.

These clubs add a personal touch to work life, allowing team members to bond over shared passions.

Celebrate like you mean it

Who says remote work can’t have confetti? Recognize both the small and the big wins – whether it’s crushing a project deadline or simply surviving another Monday. Virtual shoutouts, GIF marathons, or even quick video celebrations during team calls can boost morale and remind everyone they’re appreciated.

Make room for fun

We might have left water cooler chats in the office, but that doesn’t apply to fun. Add some playfulness to your team’s routine with creative activities, like:

  • Theme days on Slack: Think “Throwback Thursday,” where people share old photos, or “Meme Monday” for a laugh.
  • Virtual games: Host trivia nights or online escape rooms to encourage team collaboration in a light-hearted way.
  • Wellness challenges: Create a space to share yoga routines, step counts, or meditation tips – bonus points for anyone brave enough to try a TikTok fitness trend.

We’ve recently introduced Friday coffee breaks, a weekly recurring invite for our teams to finish their week together on a fun note virtually.

Align on a shared purpose

Belonging isn’t just about chit-chat – it’s also about feeling you’re part of something bigger. Remind your team of the collective goals and how their contributions make a difference. Sharing stories of how a recent project helped a client or advanced the company’s mission makes it easier for people to see the bigger picture and allows them to feel more connected to the broader team’s success.

Empathy and flexibility are key

Remote work blurs the lines between professional and personal life, and sometimes, life gets messy. Be understanding of your team’s challenges and offer flexibility where you can. Even a quick “How are you doing?” message can go a long way in making someone feel supported, seen, and valued.

Set the stage with the right tools

A team is only as connected as the tools it uses. Ensure your team has access to platforms that simplify communication and collaboration, like Slack, Zoom, or project management apps. Don’t forget to encourage creative use of these tools to keep the work environment lively.

The big picture

Keeping the team spirit alive in a remote world isn’t rocket science – it’s about small, intentional steps that bring people together. The possibilities are endless, from Slack clubs to virtual celebrations and shared goals. When team members feel connected, engaged, and appreciated, they’ll bring their A-game – even if they’re working from their kitchen table.

For us, it’s all about embracing the quirks of remote work and letting your creativity shine. A team that celebrates together, shares a purpose, and laughs together thrives – no matter where they log in from.
