Q&A: Breaking the glass ceiling – Female leaders in telecoms

At Qoolize, we’re proud to spotlight the women shaping the future of telecoms. In this Q&A, Sueda Tepe and Elisavet Pliakopanou share their journeys, challenges, and insights into what it means to lead, grow, and break barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

There’s been progress in how businesses approach equal opportunities, and at Qoolize we’re proud to have women in many senior positions throughout the company. Sueda Tepe, Manager of Carrier Relations, and Elisavet Pliakopanou, Head of Product Development, share how their careers in telecoms took shape, and offer up some thoughts on the gender balance in the wider industry.

Tell us a bit about your career to date.

Sueda: I applied for roles in telecoms after graduating from university; then, a few years into my career, I was offered a position at Qoolize. Since then, I’ve worked to build my knowledge and position, which leapt forward earlier this year when I was promoted to Manager of Carrier Relations and Growth. I now lead a team where I not only take on more responsibility but also support and share my experience.

Elisavet: For me, I’ve worked across a few different businesses, helping them optimize their connectivity strategies and network lifecycles. My roles have focused on driving growth and innovation within the company I’ve worked for and the industry as a whole.

Why telecoms?

Sueda: The industry is dynamic and exciting – that’s always drawn me in. And it’s diverse; it’s not just about technology but about building connections across countries and bringing people together.

Elisavet: My interest in telecoms started at a very young age. After completing my degree, I began my career at a one-stop shop for Global Internet Access services.

What was your first job in the industry?

Sueda: I was an Executive Assistant in 2020, the year I graduated from university.

Elisavet: My first job was in a sales support role, focusing on large channel accounts. That early experience helped me develop a deep understanding of connectivity solutions and set the foundation for my leadership journey.

Have you noticed an obvious gender divide?

Sueda: Definitely. Much of the industry is still male-dominated –  there has to be considerable effort toward creating equal opportunities. Qoolize is definitely one to note. When I started, I was the only woman, but now there’s an even balance.

Elisavet: The telecom industry has traditionally been male-dominated, especially in leadership and technical roles. But I’ve seen positive changes, with more women stepping into decision-making positions and companies recognizing the value of diverse leadership.

What challenges have you faced during your career?

Sueda: Navigating different cultures and maintaining effective communication overseas. It’s a big learning curve for anyone working in a global company, especially in an industry where we connect people regardless of location.

Elisavet: A general challenge I’m sure most women like me have faced is the continuous need to prove our worth. In telecoms, it’s easy to worry about our position and whether we’re taken seriously, but I’ve seen companies making efforts to create equal opportunities when hiring.

What’s been a highlight of your career?

Sueda: Moving up the ladder in a competitive landscape. Being goal-oriented and determined to succeed has been the main driver, and without that I wouldn’t have the success I do today.

Elisavet: The recent release of Sphera – our connectivity management solution – is the project I’m most proud of. At Qoolize, we focus on delivering exceptional customer experiences, powered by technology but driven by people.

What developments have you seen for telecom businesses recruiting women, particularly in leadership positions?

Sueda: There’s been a shift with companies recruiting more women in leadership. Qoolize is a great example of this change, and it’s only going to continue. The presence of equality within industries is becoming apparent, and it’s something I love to see.

Elisavet: While it’s been a slower process, companies have put more effort into initiatives for recruiting women and appointing them to leadership roles. The next step is for businesses to elevate their leadership development programs and continue to create equal opportunities for women.

Why did you join Qoolize?

Sueda: Qoolize’s culture was one of the main reasons. It was clear that it’s a company looking to grow and adapt while offering equal opportunities. Everyone’s work is recognized, and it makes me happy to be part of such a positive company.

Elisavet: In the competitive landscape of telecoms, Qoolize is an innovative business. From its product portfolio to the constant focus on developing teams, it was clear my career progression would be limitless. It’s an exciting company to work for.

How does Qoolize support you as a leader in the business?

Sueda: Qoolize has continually encouraged my personal and professional growth, and that support is invaluable. Everyone here is invested not just in elevating Qoolize, but pushing each other to be the best.

Elisavet: Qoolize values leadership and innovation, and creates a safe space for employees to share ideas and strategic initiatives. That collaborative environment has resulted in business and personal growth, and as the industry adapts, so will we.

What advice would you give to women?

Sueda: Connections matter just as much as your skills. Be yourself, know your worth, and don’t hesitate to show the world who you are. Being social, respecting your work, and putting in genuine effort will always push you a step ahead.

Elisavet: Always pursue your interests confidently. Don’t hold yourself back – there are opportunities out there.

What more needs to be done to achieve a better gender balance?

Sueda: Companies need to take a proactive approach to strengthening their employees and building a fair, equal environment. Recognizing the strengths of women and men creates a powerhouse of a confident and collaborative team.

Elisavet: Move beyond awareness and take action. Implement structures and programs that guide women in their path to leadership, help male employees appreciate diversity, and create a safe, collaborative environment for everyone. This will pave the way for those starting their careers, giving them the confidence to pursue leadership roles.
